But every metaphor and consequence arising from the original theme begs the question, “God is dead, long
live. . . ?”

* * * * *

Nietzsche qualifies his metaphor and hints at some answers. First, he states that “. . . the belief in the Christian God has ceased to be believable” (Nietzsche, 447). Second, he describes man’s life after God’s death:

“Indeed, philosophers and ‘free spirits’ feel as if a new dawn were shining on us when we receive the tidings that ‘the old god is dead’; our heart overflows with gratitude, amazement, anticipation, expectation. At last the horizon appears free again to us, even granted that it is not bright, at last our ships may venture out again, venture out to face any danger; all the daring of the lover of knowledge is permitted again; the sea, our sea, lies open again; perhaps there has never yet been such an ‘open sea’ (448).

The open sea is our psyche. But before I become too blithe in my interpretation, I must remind myself that the death of God tormented and tortured the philosopher.

City couple bumped into Royals 4,000 miles away

0 Comments | Leicester Mercury, Jul 28, 2010

The Queen’s recent visit to Canada prompted former Leicester man John Newby, who lives in Calgary, Alberta, to contact me with a story about a previous royal visit.

Back in July 1973, John’s mum and dad, William and Connie, (nee Glover), were visiting him and were in the right place at the right time to meet the Queen.

John had emigrated to Canada in 1966, after National Service and an apprenticeship at Bell & Sons, Printers, in Guildhall Lane, Leicester.

He says his parents visited him twice in 1968 and 1973.

John has sent me a write-up in the local paper about the meeting.

The headline says: “After 62 years, finally meet Queen” and the story reads: “For Mr and Mrs William H Newby, of Leicester, England, who have lived all of their 62 years little more than 100 miles from Windsor Castle, it took the Calgary Stampede and 4,000 miles of travel to give them their first close-up meeting with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

“It happened Thursday afternoon in the Kinsmen Centre at Stampede Park.

“The Newbys arrived in Calgary Wednesday to visit son John and his wife of E322 4020 37 St S W. “On Thursday, with grandchildren Kathy, four, and Alan 12, they went to the Stampede, spent some time on the midway, where Alan won a stuffed dog, joined a crowd gathered at Flare Square, moved inside when the gate was opened to a portion of the public, wandered around and found themselves inside the Kinsmen building when Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers closed the entrance to further members of the public.

“Somewhat puzzled, they asked the reason for the closing and were told the Queen and Prince Philip would be along in a few minutes.

“Next thing they knew, they found themselves almost elbow to elbow with the royal couple looking at the same exhibit.

“Phillip, spotting Kathy’s stuffed dog, stopped to chat with the little girl.

“She told him Alan had won it at a midway game.

“‘With one shot?’ asked the prince.

“‘Yes, sir,’ declared Alan. “‘Good,’ said Philip as he and the Queen moved along to look at some more RCMP exhibits.

“Thursday night, the Newbys were still somewhat dazzled by the situation. ‘It was incredible,’ declared son John. ‘My parents have lived all their lives at Leicester. There was one time when the Queen and Prince Philip visited there, but the closest Mum and Dad got to them was a few hundred yards away

Out of the many jobs to do online available, there are also many people who start their business venture by setting up a simple website and signing up as affiliates. Then, they just ad their affiliate link to their promotions and when anybody buys something using their links they get a commission. Of course, those simple websites must have some content that will make visitors coming back.

There are some other jobs to do online or programs for the more adventurous, these are the investments programs. Here, you have two options, you can do it by yourself from scratch or you can get in one of the investment programs that are already in place. Some of these programs are private investor?s clubs and HYIPs. The first is a group of people who get together big amounts of money and invest it in several markets. This private investor?s club usually have a member who is an experienced analyst or a licensed broker who supervise the investments so they are as less risky as possible.

VIRGINIA TECH VET CHOSEN TO CARE FOR OLYMPIC HORSES

0 Comments | Roanoke Times & World News, Nov 27, 2007 | by Greg Esposito greg.esposito@roanoke.com 381-1675

A recent addition to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech will be spending next summer in China, caring for horses in the 2008 Olympics.

David Hodgson has been selected as one of about 20 official Olympic Committee veterinarians, caring for about 200 horses that will be competing in the games. After a veterinary career that took him from his native Australia to Washington State University and back, David Hodgson and his family relocated to Blacksburg this summer. He heads the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the vet school.

Hodgson specializes in internal medicine and has a doctorate in equine sports medicine. But he and the other vets at the games will treat a variety of ailments, from leg injuries to coughs and colds commonly suffered by horses after a long trip.

Keeping the horses cool in the heat of the summer in Hong Kong will be another challenge, he said. Because of quarantine restrictions for horses entering mainland China, the equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong, not Beijing. That should benefit the horses, Hodgson said, as air quality problems should not be an issue as some fear it will be in Northern China.

Hodgson has taken two trips to Hong Kong in the past few months and said the venue looks amazing. He has served as a veterinarian in past world championship events as well as at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. He will spend five weeks in Hong Kong, starting in mid-July when the horses arrive.

Until then he’ll be in Blacksburg, his new home. Hodgson admitted that relocating to the New River Valley may seem like an unusual career move for an Aussie with ties to the Pacific Northwest

Another important consideration is the actual time it takes to get the printing done as well. This is especially crucial if you have a deadline or other time constraints placed upon you. If you want to have the ability to offer handouts for some kind of presentation that you are doing. If you have a presentation to give at a larger sized auditorium, many times the use of PowerPoint may not work just due to the distance that some of the participants may be from the screen.

If you wait until the last minute a local printer will rip your head off for a last minute print job, what I mean is they will charge you a hefty fee for rushing it. This is one of the reasons you should always have your own printing station at your home office, so that you can do it yourself in an emergency.

Another issue you have to deal with when you are under a deadline is not having the proper time to proof the end product which could lead to major embarrassment.

Some patterns on the internet are for sale and others are free. You can also purchase them in pattern books. Some are available in books centered around a theme, such as holidays or children?s designs.

Print out the patterns you love as you find them. Even if you aren?t planning to use them right away. Free sites change often and the pattern may not be there when you need it. Use a binder to store the patterns until you are ready to use them. You can photocopy your favourite patterns out of your books and add these to your binder as well. This will help you build an extensive, organized collection of patterns for future use.

You can use either carbon paper or graphite to put the pattern on the wood.

Today I’m going to describe a process for applying it to elicit benefits from features and to determine if a marketing task is really worth it!

This article will require you to roleplay in your own head, or better still, get the help of a colleague or friend to play the role of the “So what customer”.

Eliciting Benefits From Features

Now, imagine, if you will, for a moment your business…

…Think of a service or product you provide…

…How do you currently describe it to potential customers?…

…Okay, now put yourself in the position of one of your customers or potential customers and ask yourself, “So what does that mean to me?”…

…You should be able to elaborate on your initial description to provide more specific and relevant information about your offer…

…Put yourself in the shoes of your customer again and ask, “So what does that mean to me?” in response to your elaboration…

…Aim to keep this dialogue going until you run out of answers to the “So what?” question…

…If you write these responses down you will begin to see a hierarchy of benefits leading from what is usually a simple feature…

…The final response should describe the core benefit to your customer although the journey on the way to this will uncover lots of other useful benefits to consider and use…

Next time you communicate (when networking, talking or writing) about your product or service you might want to start at the other end of this hierarchy (the end with the juicy benefits) and build your message around that.

Remember, most people buy benefits not features.

A feature might describe something in technical terms.
